The UK Branch session of Member Connect was held in London in‑person and also online with ENZ Chief Executive, Richard Templer, and Wellington staff joining us remotely. Richard provided us with a thorough overview of what the organisation is doing and where we are heading. This was followed by a period of discussion on the topics raised. The evening also provided an opportunity for those who attended in person with some networking time. |

We had a very interesting visit to the old pumping station at Crossness, made especially enjoyable by our hosts, Petra and Rob from the Crossness Beam Engine Trust. There are four beam engines in the pump house, one of which has had its engine restored to operating condition, although it doesn't pump, one that is in the process of being restored and two that will remain unrestored. |
Professor Sarah Staplers (City, University of London) and Dr Andrew McNamara (City, University of London and Chief Engineer, Kanaka UK Building) gave a very interesting presentation on their work in collaboration with Peltry Piling on the HIPER™ hollow pile product which has enhanced shaft capacity, can be constructed from pre‑cast elements and can use the void for sustainable building heating and cooling. The presentation covered the background to the development of HIPER™ piles along with laboratory testing, largely using physical modelling to quantify enhanced shaft friction, and some initial testing to explore the effect of heating and cooling on pile movements. We were pleased to be able to share a meal with our presenters after the talk. |

Selwyn Aickin and his wife Diana joined with members of Engineers Australia for a four day tour of the World War One Western Front in Belgium and France, visiting many sites commemorating the fallen in battles fought during that war, particularly by the Anzacs. The tour had a particular emphasis on the achievements of the Engineers and Tunnellers who tunnelled under enemy lines in a war fought as much below ground as above.. |

I was humbled to represent the UK Branch of Engineering New Zealand at the Anzac day ceremonies in London this year. The event was even more poignant as it was the first in‑person Anzac day following 2 years of postponed events due to Covid. The first wreath was laid by William, Duke of Cambridge and then followed by their excellencies Mr Bede Corry (High Commissioner for NZ) and Hon George Brandis QC (High Commissioner for Australia). The photos show the cenotaph flanked with wreaths and the combined Australian, New Zealand and British (Chelsea Pensioners) service personnel marching by. The service continued in Westminster Abbey, which was attended by their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The service was very moving, with contrasts drawn to the current conflict in Ukraine and the desire for peace globally. The prayers offered by the children of New Zealand and Australia brought the hope of a brighter future where all people live together peacefully. |

We were very grateful for the opportunity provided by Jim Mackey, the Project Manager for McGEE, to have another look at the Claridge's Basement Project. Besides levels B1 & B2, in the photos, we were shown the new, and very impressive, staff welfare facilities on B3, the mechanical and electrical plant on B4 & B5, and the wine cellar on B6 (not yet stocked!). We were also shown the Claridge's Artspace gallery area which has been created by excavating a basement under the original Victorian wing of the hotel. This had been built since our last visit in 2019. |

It was great to be able to celebrate the festive season with guests from Engineering New Zealand and Engineers Australia 'In Person' once again at our soiree in the penthouse suite at New Zealand House in central London. This was the last event we were able to hold in the Penthouse before New Zealand House, a Grade II list building built 1959‑1963, was closed in 2022 for major redevelopment. |

A group of us met on a gloriously sunny dry day in autumn for a very enjoyable walk along the Severn coast from Portishead to Clevedon, lead by local member, Liam Edwards. Lunch at a pub in Clevedon at the end of the walk was greatly anticipated and didn't disappoint. After lunch, each made their own way, some venturing to view the Clevedon Pier. |

The summer social this year took the form of a pub lunch at The Dove beside the Thames near Hammersmith. It was a glorious summer's day, maybe one of the last for this year. The lunch was attended by 12 members and family, plus baby Emily, almost one year old (who prevented her father from attending last year!). After lunch we strolled beside the Thames until we were magically drawn into another pub for rehydrating refreshments. Many thanks to those who came along and helped to make the day so enjoyable. |

Huge congratulations to Fritha Bevin‑McCrimmon, branch committee member, on being awarded the 2018 WISE Rising Star Award. The award is for a young woman aged 25-35 at the early stages of a STEM career who is already identified as a potential star in her chosen profession. Judges wanted to hear from the next generation of future Chief Executives how they will bring change to their sector from within. In awarding this prize to Fritha, the judges said "The winner of the Rising Star award has a community perspective and doesn't just focus on engineering. She has a strong objective approach with a mix of education and corporate responsibility for children." |

Prof. Evans-Freeman gave a talk to the branch during which she relayed the IPENZ President's Address (on behalf of Andrew Read). The address covered key themes of 'a time for change' in the engineering profession in NZ, current membership by location and gender, as well as a look to the future with emerging technologies. She then gave some glimpses of the new University of Canterbury campus buildings - as part of the earthquake 'Recovery and Renewal' programme. This new campus includes the Rutherford Science and Innovation Centre, and is due to open in 2017. An enjoyable meal was held following the talk at a local Italian restaurant.

After a quick recap of the year's activities, review of the branch finances and election of the branch officers and committee, we listened to a fascinating talk on Biomedical Engineering presented by Professor Nic Smith, Dean of Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering, Auckland University, themed: Can a clinician learn anything from Nic's presentation gave us an insight into the application of advanced high performance clinical imaging techniques to aid diagnosis and clinical planning, and outlined the current state of the art in this area using examples from engineering and cardiology including coronary artery disease and heart failure, showing us how this engineering based approach is changing medical research and practice. Nic went on to show us the progress of converting the old Lion Brewery site in Newmarket into the new home of Auckland University's Engineering School, especially for the heavy engineering labs. As Nic commented, "For years students have been trying to turn the university into a brewery, now a brewery is being turned into a university!" Nic concluded his talk with an update on the state of degree level engineering education in NZ which has seen a huge growth in enrolment numbers at all of NZ's universities in recent years, placing great strain on existing facilities. |
